FCDO Travel Advice

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/kenya

Read thoroughly the FCDO travel advise for Kenya and if you wish, you may subscribe to email alerts which will notify you of any challenges. This is the same website the team use to monitor safety before travel.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Please read this article shared by our insurance providers and reference this page by the FCDO.

Kenya is ranked 143/210 according to the Gay Travel Index 2024, therefore we recommend doing thorough research on the destination before travel. Please speak to anyone in the Student Life team or Professor Tim Weiss if you have concerns you wish to discuss in this area.

Vaccine Recommendations

The Occupational Health team will advise if you need to take or update your vaccinations before travel. This is a recommendation from the team but we would encourage you to follow their advice.

You have the choice to book your vaccines through OH or privately.

  1. Vaccines booked via OH – you will need to call the OH reception desk to make an appointment. They are based in the Sherfield building. Vaccines booked through OH are charged to our account, so there’s no expenses to submit.
  2. Vaccines booked privately – make an appointment via your travel clinic and submit expenses.

Vaccine expenses are covered by Imperial for all students on the module. Below pricing is based on OH fees, however vaccines booked privately may vary.

Vaccines needed for Kenya are: https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/country/117/kenya

  • They may require Yellow Fever - £41, if going on excursions outside of Nairobi
  • Hepatitis A (unless they have had 2 vaccines at least 6 months apart) - £23
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio (unless had a vaccine within last 10 years) - £9
  • Typhoid vaccine (unless had a vaccine in last 3 years) - £13
  • In Nairobi, there is a low risk of malaria, so anti-malaria tablets are not needed.
  • They may require malaria tablets if they travel outside of Nairobi. Students to get this over the counter at a pharmacy at a cost and will send this information in their clearance emails: https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/media_lib/mlib-uploads/full/kenya.png.
  • Bite avoidance measures should be followed

Note: We are going outside Nairobi city limits on two occasions, please answer yes to this question. The anti-malarials (and the yellow fever) both have side effects which we encourage you to discuss with the OH nurse.
