How the programme works

Volunteer safeguarding and briefing session

All volunteers are required to attend the safeguarding and briefing session before getting involved. During this session, you’ll learn more about the programme, ask any questions, and receive guidance on safeguarding vulnerable adults, including the procedures and support Imperial has in place for both volunteers and participants.

Commitment

In general, it is ideal when the same student volunteers are able to attend the whole programme - this helps to build relationships and rapport with the elderly participants. We do however understand that  it is not always possible with busy schedules for students to volunteer every week.

It is imperative that we have a minimum of 15 student volunteers per session. If you for whatever reason cannot attend a session, you must let the Student Life Lead know.

The session

Residents can drop in at any point during this time. Each volunteer will be expected to arrival punctually and stay for the whole 2.5 hours to assist, helping one resident at a time.

We ask that all volunteers read over and remind themselves about the Safeguarding policy before each session. (You can find this by clicking 'Useful Documents' page below.)

Recommendation for students to talk with resident

Talking to a stranger isn’t always easy. Here are some suggestions to help build up a conversation:

  • Ask your resident about how they're doing, what tech support they need, and the area they live in.
  • Share experiences -  So it's a two-way conversation and helps build up trust and find mutual ground, such as what you study or do at Imperial, hobbies and past times.
